Description

Juan Pablo Castel is a solitary painter convinced that other people cannot truly understand him. When Maria notices a small, easily overlooked detail in one of his paintings, he decides she may be the single exception. Attraction quickly becomes fixation as Castel pursues her, interrogates every ambiguity, and tries to force their relationship into a certainty that human intimacy cannot provide. Maria’s marriage to a blind man, her country house, and her involvement with a cousin feed his jealousy, but every event reaches the reader through Castel’s suspicious and increasingly unstable consciousness. The result is a claustrophobic psychological novel in which love, possession, and isolation become difficult to separate, and the search for perfect understanding destroys trust rather than securing it.
