In the back streets of San Francisco, a failed painter works the counter at a cheap diner while drifting through poverty and alcoholism. He meets a woman fleeing domestic violence, and the two recognize in each other the same exhaustion, loneliness, and appetite for escape. Their bond offers a fragile alternative to lives shaped by abuse and disappointment, but neither possesses the stability or resources needed to leave self-destruction behind. Around them, racism, economic hardship, addiction, and casual violence narrow every possibility for safety. Charles Willeford’s bleak noir follows two outcasts trying to make a place together in a society that has little use for them, finding moments of compassion without pretending that tenderness alone can overcome the forces closing in.
