Newspaper reporter Kate Ennis is caught in an affair with a married man as their relationship reaches a tense, uncertain turning point. Her effort to understand what has happened—and what she wants from it—moves through rural Connecticut, New York City, an island off the Washington coast, and a remote Irish road. Rather than tracing a straightforward romantic plot, the novel advances through questions, revisions, misunderstandings, and flashes of recognition, allowing emotional consequences to surface indirectly. Renata Adler’s spare everyday language and fragmented structure capture a mind testing possible explanations without settling comfortably on any of them. The result is a compressed modernist portrait of desire, separation, memory, and the difficulty of turning lived experience into a coherent account.
