Anthony Cade accepts two apparently straightforward jobs: deliver a politically explosive memoir and recover compromising letters. Both errands lead him to Chimneys, an English country estate hosting a gathering entangled with plans to restore the monarchy of oil-rich Herzoslovakia. Royalists and revolutionaries compete for the manuscript, one agent threatens Cade at gunpoint, and the death of a blackmailer is followed by the murder of a prince inside the house. After convincing Superintendent Battle that he is innocent, Cade begins following his own theory of the crime. Political intrigue, hidden identities, and conflicting loyalties intersect with another enduring mystery—the missing Koh-i-Noor diamond, which may be concealed somewhere at Chimneys.
