The Enemy is the chronologically earliest Jack Reacher story and is narrated in the first person. At the end of 1989, Army MP Major Jack Reacher investigates a general’s death in a North Carolina motel. When Reacher and Lieutenant Summer go to deliver the death notice, they find the general’s wife murdered at home. Further killings lead Reacher toward a missing conference agenda hidden among the contents of the general’s stolen briefcase. Military superiors pressure him to abandon the investigation and threaten to use an assault accusation against him. The case ultimately broadens into a suspected military conspiracy aimed at preventing downsizing after the Soviet Union’s collapse.
