After eighty-four days without a catch, Santiago is considered the unluckiest fisherman in his community. Manolin, the boy he trained, has been ordered onto another boat, though he still brings the old man food, bait, and equipment. On the eighty-fifth morning, Santiago rows far into the Gulf Stream and hooks an enormous marlin that pulls his small skiff steadily offshore. The contest becomes an ordeal of strength, patience, and judgment as he struggles against exhaustion and an adversary he increasingly respects. Through spare physical detail and Santiago’s intimate reflections, the novella examines endurance, pride, dignity, and the strange kinship between hunter and prey, asking what a hard-won struggle can mean regardless of its material outcome.
