About Ernest Hemingway
Ernest Hemingway was an American novelist, short-story writer, and journalist whose economical prose made omission an active part of narrative. He favors short declarative sentences, exact physical action, clipped dialogue, and first-person or closely limited perspectives. Emotion often enters indirectly, through repeated gestures, practical routines, or what characters cannot bring themselves to say. His recurring settings include war zones, wilderness, cafés, hospitals, and bullrings, places where love, loss, courage, and self-command are tested under pressure. In The Sun Also Rises, desire and wartime injury surface through strained conversation and the restless movement of expatriates between Paris and Pamplona. A Farewell to Arms confines war and intimacy to Frederic Henry’s perspective, allowing soldiers’ arguments and Catherine Barkley’s private hopes to complicate the public language of duty. The Old Man and the Sea narrows the method further: a fisherman, a skiff, and a marlin become a sustained sequence of physical judgments, exhaustion, and inward reflection. His stories work at even tighter scale, leaving violence and grief partly unstated.
