Candide grows up in a baron’s household under the instruction of Pangloss, who teaches him that everything happens for the best in the best possible world. When his love for the baron’s daughter is discovered, he is expelled from this sheltered life and forced into a world that persistently contradicts his education. A rapid journey through Europe, South America, and Asia exposes Candide and his companions to disaster, cruelty, absurdity, and repeated reversals of fortune, yet inherited optimism proves remarkably difficult to abandon. Voltaire uses the speed and exaggeration of an episodic quest to test philosophical certainty against lived suffering. The result is a comic, corrosive satire of comforting systems of thought and the human ingenuity required to preserve them despite overwhelming evidence.
