Description

The mistreated animals of Manor Farm, inspired by Old Major’s vision of freedom, drive out the neglectful Mr. Jones and claim the farm for themselves. Pigs Snowball and Napoleon organize the new society around Animalism and its promise that all animals are equal. Yet education and collective labor soon coexist with special privileges for the pigs. A struggle over Snowball’s proposed windmill gives Napoleon the opportunity to expel his rival, abolish open debate, and concentrate power, while Squealer revises the past to justify every change. Written in plain, ironic prose, Orwell’s beast fable traces how revolutionary ideals become instruments of dictatorship while reflecting the Russian Revolution and Stalinist rule.
