During the Great Depression, migrant workers George Milton and Lennie Small cross California in search of ranch jobs and a place where they can remain together. George protects Lennie, whose intellectual disability and panicked encounter with a woman have already forced them to flee one town. Both cling to a vision of buying a small farm, where Lennie can tend rabbits and neither man will answer to a boss. At their latest ranch, the dream approaches possibility when the aging Candy offers his savings, but the owner’s hostile son, Curley, singles Lennie out. Steinbeck’s compact tragedy sets fellowship and hope against poverty, loneliness, unequal power, and the danger created when innocence cannot control its own strength.
