In a dystopian, totalitarian version of the United States, the regime stages an annual contest called the Long Walk. One hundred boys must walk continuously along Route 1 until only one remains. Falling below the required pace brings warnings and, once those are exhausted, lethal force from the soldiers controlling the event. Maine teenager Ray Garraty enters the contest and forms an early bond with fellow walker Peter McVries. Ray hopes to reach Freeport and see his girlfriend Jan, but worsening exhaustion and morale force the walkers to endure mounting psychological pressure as the promised prize draws closer for the last survivor.
