Roland Deschain, the last gunslinger, crosses a vast desert in pursuit of the mysterious man in black. His trail runs through an arid, forbidding world where Western landscapes open onto fantasy, science fiction, and horror. When a farmer named Brown gives him shelter, Roland recounts his passage through Tull, a troubled town where his quarry prepared a trap. Farther along, Roland meets Jake Chambers, a boy who becomes his companion for part of the journey, complicating a pursuit that has demanded ruthless single-mindedness. Stark and episodic, the novel turns the lone gunman’s chase into a mythic confrontation with loyalty, obsession, and the cost of purpose, while the nature of both the man in black and Roland’s larger goal remains uncertain.
