Physics student William Mandella is conscripted into an elite United Nations force fighting the alien Taurans. After lethal training on Earth and near Pluto, he travels through collapsars to distant battlefields, where survival depends as much on technology and chance as skill. Relativistic travel makes every deployment a voyage into Earth’s future: a few years for Mandella become decades at home, leaving civilian society increasingly unfamiliar. His bond with fellow soldier Marygay Potter offers continuity, but time dilation threatens to separate them permanently. Repeatedly returned to service and promoted largely through survival, Mandella eventually commands troops whose culture he barely understands. The novel turns interstellar war into an estranging study of institutional violence, lost time, and soldiers made obsolete by the conflict sustaining them.
