Description

During a galaxy-wide war between the post-scarcity Culture and the Idiran Empire, shape-changing mercenary Bora Horza Gobuchul accepts an Idiran mission to recover a stranded Culture Mind. The artificial intelligence has taken refuge on Schar’s World, a forbidden memorial to an extinct civilization and the devastation of nuclear war. Separated from his employers, Horza joins the pirate ship Clear Air Turbulence and navigates a succession of hazardous encounters before leading a search through the planet’s subterranean missile complex. Because Horza opposes the Culture, the conflict unfolds from the perspective of someone fighting against the society at the center of the series. The novel combines large-scale space opera with a skeptical examination of ideology, artificial intelligence, warfare, and the costs hidden beneath technological abundance.
