In 2850, Louis Wu is physically youthful, long-lived, and bored when the alien Nessus recruits him to investigate Ringworld, an immense artificial band encircling a sunlike star. Their small crew also includes a Kzin and Teela Brown, chosen for qualities that may matter to the cautious puppeteers who fear the structure could threaten their migration. Ringworld’s inner surface offers breathable air, Earthlike gravity, and more living space than any ordinary planet, but the expedition loses contact and crashes soon after arrival. Stranded, the travelers cross ruined landscapes toward the ring’s edge, seeking inhabitants, explanations, and a route home. The novel combines survival adventure with engineering speculation on a scale designed to make worlds themselves seem small.
