The Shards takes the form of a fictionalized memoir about Bret Easton Ellis’s final year of high school in Los Angeles in 1981. Looking back on adolescence, the novel filters that period through a narrator who shares the author’s name, blurring the boundary between remembered experience and invention. Its setting places private fears and unstable perceptions against the social world of a Los Angeles school year. Because the story is framed retrospectively, the younger Bret’s immediate experience is shadowed by an older voice trying to shape what happened. The result is a self-conscious work of fiction concerned with memory, storytelling, and the difficulty of separating a lived past from a constructed one.
