Description

Sue Trinder, an orphan raised in a London household of baby farmers and petty thieves, owes her fierce loyalty to the woman who cared for her. When a charismatic con man proposes an elaborate fraud, Sue agrees to enter the isolated home of wealthy Maud Lilly as her maid. Her task is to help him win Maud's trust, seize her inheritance, and arrange her confinement in an asylum. Yet daily intimacy changes Sue's view of the sheltered young woman she has been hired to betray. As affection complicates every practiced deception, the scheme becomes a gothic contest over money, class, freedom, and who has the power to define another person's reality.
