Born into an English workhouse, orphan Oliver Twist learns early that poverty is treated as a moral crime. His request for more food brings punishment, and further mistreatment drives him to flee for London. There, the seemingly friendly Artful Dodger leads him into Fagin’s gang of child pickpockets before Oliver understands what they do. A chance at safety with Mr Brownlow is cut short when Fagin’s accomplices abduct him, and Oliver is eventually forced into a burglary that leaves him wounded. Around the boy’s struggle to escape exploitation, Dickens builds a crowded social novel of institutions, criminals, and respectable citizens whose lives intersect across class boundaries. Dark melodrama and biting satire expose how nineteenth-century England neglects, disciplines, and profits from vulnerable children.
