Description

Orphaned Pip grows up in Kent before his path leads from a rural setting toward London in the early to mid-nineteenth century. His story opens with an encounter with escaped convict Abel Magwitch in a graveyard. Along the way, his world includes the eccentric Miss Havisham, cold Estella, and kind blacksmith Joe Gargery. As Pip’s hopes and ambitions change, anticipated wealth, class, crime, and alienation shape his development. The novel explores wealth and poverty, love and rejection, while tracing conscience, redemption, and moral transformation. Through Pip’s changing expectations, Dickens examines how ambition and social position can influence a life.
