Description

After eighteen years of imprisonment in the Bastille, French physician Doctor Manette is released and reunited with Lucie, the daughter he has never known. Their new life in London draws them into the fortunes of Charles Darnay, a French émigré burdened by his aristocratic family, and Sydney Carton, a dissolute English lawyer who closely resembles him. As revolution overturns France, private loyalties become entangled with public vengeance, carrying the characters between London and Paris and exposing them to imprisonment and death. Set before and during the French Revolution and Reign of Terror, Dickens’s historical novel contrasts sacrifice with self-interest and personal justice with collective retribution amid a society violently settling its inherited debts.
