Sixteen-year-old Karl Rossmann is sent from Europe to New York to escape a family scandal, only to find that every apparent refuge in America carries new conditions. A ship’s stoker and an unexpected uncle briefly offer support, but Karl is soon wandering with two exploitative drifters. Work as a hotel lift-boy promises stability until one compromised decision costs him the position, and another household confines him in a servant’s role. Kafka’s incomplete novel follows Karl through a vast, distorted America where institutions advertise opportunity while exposing the powerless to arbitrary judgment. Comic, anxious, and episodic, his journey makes displacement a continual struggle to secure work, dignity, and freedom without understanding the rules that govern any of them.
