During the Great Depression, Monterey’s Cannery Row runs on sardine boats, canneries, cheap rooms, and the improvised economies of people living at the margins. At its social center is Doc, a marine biologist whose laboratory and steady generosity make him a refuge for the neighborhood. Mack and his band of unemployed friends decide to repay that kindness with a party. Their good intentions summon the entire community, but the celebration wrecks Doc’s home and workplace, leaving them ashamed and determined to try again. Around this comic disaster, Steinbeck’s episodic novel gathers grocer Lee Chong and other residents into a warm but unsentimental portrait of poverty, fellowship, loneliness, and the fragile dignity of people making lives from scarcity.
