Shortly after World War I, Danny returns to Monterey and unexpectedly inherits two houses in Tortilla Flat, the poor hillside district where he and his paisano friends have long lived by improvisation. One house becomes the center of a loose household devoted to wine, food, friendship, and freedom from respectable routines. From this simple arrangement, John Steinbeck builds an episodic cycle of schemes, quarrels, gifts, and moral tests, recasting Danny and his companions as a comic Round Table whose quests concern immediate appetites rather than courtly glory. The humor never entirely conceals the group’s poverty or the fragility of their idyll. Property promises security, yet it also brings obligations that strain the very fellowship it shelters.
