Harry “Rabbit” Angstrom is twenty-six, a former high-school basketball star now selling kitchen gadgets and chafing against suburban life in Pennsylvania. He lives with his pregnant wife, Janice, and their young son, but an unhappy marriage and the monotony of adulthood drive him to abandon them in search of escape. Back in his hometown, Harry begins an affair with Ruth Leonard and moves into her apartment, while a local Episcopal priest urges him to return to Janice. His divided loyalties become more urgent when Ruth also faces pregnancy and he remains unwilling to seek a divorce. Harry’s restless flight through marriage, sex, work, and responsibility exposes the damage caused by his determination to preserve freedom at other people’s expense.
