In Lonesome Dove, retired Texas Rangers Woodrow Call and Augustus McCrae run a cattle company in a dusty border town, their great adventures apparently behind them. When former comrade Jake Spoon arrives while fleeing an accidental shooting and describes the promise of Montana, Call decides to drive a herd north and build a ranch. The expedition gathers cowhands, companions, and unresolved desires, including Gus’s hope of seeing Clara again and Jake’s troubled involvement with Lorena. Dust storms, dangerous rivers, distance, and the waning frontier test the travelers as sharply as their own loyalties. Expansive yet intimate, the novel follows friendship, aging, death, and unrequited love across a journey that asks what remains of the Old West—and of the men formed by it—as both approach their end.
