Description

In the early 1840s, young Texas Rangers Augustus McCrae and Woodrow Call are still learning what survival on the frontier demands. Their first expeditions bring them into conflict with the Comanche war chief Buffalo Hump before they enlist in Caleb Cobb's reckless campaign to seize Santa Fe for Texas. Cobb's ambition drives an ill-prepared force across a barren territory where thirst, exposure, violence, and competing claims to the land steadily strip away its confidence. When the expedition collapses, the survivors face arrest and a forced march across the Jornada del Muerto toward El Paso. The novel treats Gus and Call's apprenticeship as an ordeal, showing how friendship, romantic longing, command, and repeated disaster begin shaping two very different frontier lives.
