In the early 1950s, high-school seniors Sonny Crawford and Duane Jackson are growing up in Thalia, a fading Texas town with few prospects and fewer places to escape one another’s scrutiny. Their friendship begins to strain as both become entangled with Jacy Farrow, the restless daughter of a wealthy family who sees romance as one possible route beyond Thalia. Around them, marriages sour, sexual encounters carry consequences no one is prepared to face, and older residents offer imperfect models of adulthood. Sam the Lion, who runs the pool hall, café, and movie theater, provides a rare source of steadiness. As the theater approaches its final showing, the novel links the friends’ coming of age to the decline of a community losing both its gathering places and its future.
