Twenty-year-old Kenji earns money by guiding foreign men through Tokyo’s clubs, peep shows, and hostess bars. Just before New Year’s, an American tourist named Frank hires him for three nights, offering enough money to pull Kenji away from plans with his girlfriend, Jun. Frank’s awkward stories, strange appearance, and abrupt shifts in manner soon make the familiar nightlife district feel menacing. As reports of a serial killer unsettle the city, Kenji begins to suspect his client but remains bound to him by work, curiosity, and fear. Ryū Murakami blends psychological horror, social criticism, and dark humor in a compact novel about alienation, xenophobia, loneliness, and the violence concealed beneath consumer pleasure.
