Across a sequence of linked stories, American explorers and settlers reach Mars, encounter its indigenous civilization, and gradually remake the planet in their own image. Each expedition reveals another stage of colonization, from first contact and technological wonder to displacement, conformity, censorship, and cultural erasure. Meanwhile, Earth remains trapped in militarism and moves toward nuclear devastation, making Mars both an escape from human history and a new landscape on which to repeat it. The episodic form shifts among eerie encounters, domestic dramas, satire, and elegy, allowing individual lives to register the larger transformation. The result is a science-fiction chronicle of creativity and destruction traveling together wherever humanity goes.
