After surviving a shipwreck in the southern Pacific, young scientist Edward Prendick becomes stranded on the island of Dr. Moreau. As he explores the island, he encounters a society of animal-human hybrids. Moreau has created these human-like beings by subjecting animals to painful vivisection experiments. Prendick’s discovery brings him face to face with the consequences of Moreau’s work and the lives transformed by it. Through this unsettling premise, the novel examines cruelty, moral responsibility, human identity, trauma, and interference with nature, while asking what obligations accompany scientific power over living creatures.
