In 1922, Midwestern veteran Nick Carraway moves to Long Island to sell bonds and finds himself between two worlds of wealth. Across the bay live his cousin Daisy Buchanan and her old-money husband, Tom, whose affair with Myrtle Wilson connects their household to a garage in the desolate valley of ashes. Next door to Nick, the enigmatic Jay Gatsby fills his mansion with lavish parties while pursuing a single private aim: reuniting with Daisy. Nick becomes both participant and witness as Gatsby’s longing draws these lives together and exposes the power protecting inherited privilege. Through his observant first-person account, the novel contrasts Jazz Age spectacle with loneliness, class resentment, and the darker promises of the American Dream.
