Description

Vince Majestyk, a Vietnam veteran and former convict, needs to harvest the watermelons on his 160-acre Colorado farm before delay ruins him. When a small-time criminal tries to impose a protection scheme, Majestyk rejects his crew and hires experienced migrant workers, setting off a confrontation that lands him in custody beside notorious hit man Frank Renda. During an attempt by Renda’s associates to free him from a prison transfer, Majestyk seizes the hit man and proposes a blunt bargain: custody of Renda in exchange for enough time to save his crop. Renda responds by making the dispute personal. Leonard’s lean crime novel pits a farmer’s practical code and urgent livelihood against an assassin whose wounded pride transforms a local shakedown into a relentless vendetta.
