In 1957, Lee Mellon moves through Big Sur convinced that he descends from a Confederate general connected to the California coast. No history book or official record contains the man, yet a drifter claims to have heard the same unlikely story. Lee turns this doubtful ancestor into a private mythology, using the Confederacy’s rebellion against the Union to interpret his own quarrel with modern American society. His companion is drawn into a life governed less by evidence than by Lee’s improvisations, schemes, and stubborn convictions. Episodic, comic, and deliberately unstable, the novel treats history as something its characters invent while exploring the gap between what people believe, what they perceive, and the reality that continues to resist them.
