In 1930s Edinburgh, charismatic teacher Jean Brodie selects six ten-year-old girls to form an elite circle within their school. Instead of following the prescribed curriculum, she fills their lessons with art, classical culture, stories from her private life, and admiration for fascism. The girls’ identity as the Brodie set deepens as they grow older, even while the headmistress seeks grounds to dismiss their teacher. Brodie’s romantic entanglements with the art and singing teachers further complicate her authority, and she begins directing her pupils’ loyalties and desires as confidently as their education. Darkly comic and psychologically exact, the novel examines how inspiration becomes control when a teacher treats young lives as material for her own design.
