During Saint Petersburg’s luminous summer nights, a nameless young man wanders the city after another day spent largely inside his imagination. Lonely and accustomed to dreaming of relationships rather than forming them, he intervenes when Nastenka is troubled in the street. The encounter leads to four nights of conversation in which the strangers exchange confidences and briefly escape their isolation. Nastenka offers friendship only if he promises not to fall in love, then recounts her sheltered life with a strict blind grandmother and her hopes for a lodger who courted her before leaving the city. As companionship awakens the narrator to ordinary happiness, his fantasies collide with Nastenka’s existing devotion. This intimate first-person story explores longing, self-deception, and the fragile boundary between imagined and shared life.
