An unnamed writer looks back on the period when he and Holly Golightly shared a Manhattan brownstone in wartime New York. Holly, a young woman who remade herself from a country girl into a café-society figure, lives on gifts from wealthy men and dreams of marrying into security. She enters the narrator's room one night while escaping an unwanted guest, calls him Fred after her beloved brother, and draws him into her restless social orbit. Weekly paid visits to a prisoner and signs that someone is watching her hint at dangers beneath the performance. Through the narrator's fascinated, incomplete view, the novella portrays a woman determined to remain unattached even as she searches for somewhere to belong.
