Constance Chatterley is a young upper-class woman trapped in an emotionally barren marriage to Sir Clifford, a wealthy landowner paralyzed from the waist down by a wartime injury. Clifford’s absorption in money and status leaves Constance increasingly isolated on their estate. Her encounter with Oliver Mellors, the gamekeeper, develops into a relationship that offers both physical intimacy and emotional recognition. Yet the distance between their social positions makes their attachment a challenge to the class system surrounding them. Through Constance’s awakening, the novel examines the separation of mind from body, the damage caused by industrial and social hierarchies, and the possibility of a more complete human connection in a culture governed by property and convention.
