David, an American living in Paris, is engaged to Hella, who is traveling in Spain, when he meets Giovanni, an Italian bartender at a gay bar. Their affair draws David into the intimacy of Giovanni’s cramped, disordered room, but desire cannot free him from the shame and fear he has absorbed from a society hostile to his sexuality. He tries to preserve an acceptable vision of himself as a heterosexual man even as that performance isolates both lovers and makes every decision more damaging. Set among expatriates and outsiders, the novel explores masculinity, alienation, sexual identity, and the human cost of self-denial. Its central tension lies between the possibility of honest love and David’s determination to escape what that love reveals about him.
