Fourteen-year-old Mattie Ross intends to see Tom Chaney punished for murdering her father and fleeing into Indian Territory with an outlaw gang. After negotiating fiercely over her father’s property, she hires Rooster Cogburn, an aging, one-eyed federal marshal whose hard drinking and violent reputation strike her as evidence of the necessary grit. Mattie insists on joining him, despite every attempt to send her home. Texas Ranger LaBoeuf, who wants Chaney for another killing, complicates the pursuit, and his clashes with Cogburn repeatedly threaten their uneasy posse. Narrated by an older Mattie in a precise, dryly comic voice, the western follows a stubborn girl into dangerous country while testing the difference between courage, vengeance, professional duty, and the heroic stories people tell about themselves.
