Billy Halleck, a morbidly obese lawyer, fatally strikes an elderly Romani woman with his car and uses his personal connections to escape punishment. Her father responds with a curse: although Billy continues eating, his body begins wasting away at an alarming rate. Doctors can find no explanation, and the people whose testimony protected him develop grotesque afflictions of their own. As the weight loss accelerates, Billy turns from medical answers to the community he wronged. Assisted by private investigators and a criminal associate, he follows the Romani group toward Maine and tries to force the curse’s originator to relent. Thinner turns bodily transformation into a grim conflict among guilt, privilege, revenge, and Billy’s desperate instinct for self-preservation.
