Six friends—Bernard, Susan, Rhoda, Neville, Jinny, and Louis—speak in alternating poetic soliloquies as their lives move from childhood through adulthood and middle age. They do not narrate a conventional sequence of scenes so much as reveal the changing patterns of their inner lives: Louis feels himself an outsider, Susan embraces country life and motherhood, and Rhoda struggles with anxiety and isolation. Friendships, ambitions, meetings, successes, and disappointments recur through voices that remain distinct yet continually echo one another. Nine brief coastal interludes trace the sun from sunrise to sunset, placing human time beside the impersonal rhythm of sea and light. The novel explores whether identity belongs to an individual consciousness or emerges through the people whose lives flow around it.
