Over the course of one day in postwar London, Clarissa Dalloway prepares to host an evening party. Errands and social rituals continually open into memories of Bourton, old possibilities in love, and the choices that produced her wealthy, carefully ordered life. A visit from Peter Walsh, the man she once rejected, sharpens her awareness of what time has preserved and foreclosed. Alongside Clarissa’s preparations, Septimus Smith, a war veteran isolated by trauma, moves through the same city as his experience of reality deteriorates and his wife struggles to reach him. Through fluid, stream-of-consciousness narration that passes between minds and across decades, the novel connects private memory to public life, revealing vulnerability beneath the routines and manners of interwar society.
