Harry Haller is an isolated intellectual who despises the complacent bourgeois world around him and imagines himself divided between civilized man and solitary wolf. Convinced that he cannot reconcile these selves, he plans to end his life. His course changes when he meets Hermine, an elusive young woman who guides him toward dancing, nightlife, sensual pleasure, and relationships he has dismissed as trivial. These experiences loosen Harry’s rigid identity but also lead him into the surreal Magic Theater, where personality fractures into competing possibilities. Combining manuscript, philosophical treatise, social satire, and dreamlike episode, Steppenwolf explores despair, healing, and transcendence through the unsettling idea that the self is not a fixed duality but a multitude capable of being rearranged.
