In a small Ohio town in the 1890s, the arrival of Brackett Omensetter unsettles the people who observe his seemingly effortless goodness and magnetic presence. The story unfolds through several voices, but its fiercest conflict gathers around Reverend Jethro Furber, whose jealousy of Omensetter feeds violent fantasies and a deepening spiritual and mental crisis. When Omensetter’s landlord disappears and is later found dead, suspicion threatens the newcomer’s standing and intensifies the town’s unease. Rather than offering a straightforward mystery, the novel filters communal judgment through shifting speech, memory, obsession, and belief. Its demanding, incantatory prose turns one man’s strange luck into an inquiry about innocence, envy, love, evil, and the instability of moral certainty.
