A family discovers that its house contains an impossible interior: a dark labyrinth whose dimensions exceed the building’s exterior. Their attempt to explore and document it becomes The Navidson Record, a film that may not exist. Years later, Johnny Truant finds a manuscript analyzing the documentary and begins transcribing it through increasingly intrusive footnotes, even as the work unsettles his own life and perceptions. The novel presents these nested accounts through an elaborate imitation of scholarly publishing, complete with citations, exhibits, appendices, an index, and competing layers of commentary. Pages shrink to fragments, open into visual patterns, or demand physical rotation, making reading resemble navigation through the house itself. Horror, love story, and academic satire converge in a book about obsession and unstable evidence.
