Taken from her family as a child, Tenar is renamed Arha and raised to serve as high priestess of the Tombs of Atuan. Older priestesses train her in solitary rituals and in the dark routes of the Undertomb and Labyrinth, where a hidden treasure is guarded. By fourteen, her authority includes carrying out executions ordered by the God-King. That closed life changes when she discovers Ged, a wizard searching the maze for part of an ancient ring. Instead of killing him immediately, Arha listens to his accounts of the outside world and secretly helps him, risking the hostility of the priestess Kossil. Their encounter turns the labyrinth into a test of belief, identity, freedom, and power.
