Shevek is a brilliant physicist raised on an anarchist world whose separation from its neighboring planet has hardened into mutual hostility. Convinced that intellectual exchange should cross political boundaries, he challenges the customs and institutions that isolate his society, risking his work, relationships, and place within his community. The narrative alternates between the two planets and between past and present, gradually revealing how each social order distributes freedom, property, labor, and power. Shevek’s theories contribute to the possibility of instantaneous communication across interstellar distances, but his scientific ambitions cannot be separated from his political ones. The novel tests utopian ideals against daily compromise and asks whether a revolution can remain liberating once its principles become another form of orthodoxy.
