Genly Ai arrives alone on the icebound planet Gethen as the first mobile envoy of the Ekumen, hoping to persuade its rival nations to join a coalition of humanoid worlds. His mission falters because he cannot easily read local politics or understand a society whose people have no fixed sex. Estraven, a Gethenian politician whose loyalties remain difficult for Ai to interpret, becomes central to both the diplomatic effort and Ai’s changing perception of the planet. As political pressures isolate them, distrust must give way to a more demanding form of recognition. The novel uses their relationship to examine gender, patriotism, religion, loneliness, and the limits that cultural assumptions place on genuine communication.
