An unnamed narrator insists on being sane while explaining an obsession with an old man’s pale, clouded eye. Although the old man has caused no harm, the narrator interprets heightened senses, extreme nervousness, and meticulous planning as proof of rational control. For seven nights, the speaker silently watches the sleeping man; on the eighth, the open eye prompts an attack. After concealing the body beneath the floorboards, the narrator welcomes investigating police officers with complete confidence. Then a faint ringing grows into what seems to be the dead man’s heartbeat. Told as a fevered attempt at self-justification, the Gothic story traps readers inside a mind where precision and madness reinforce one another, turning guilt, sound, and obsessive perception into sources of mounting terror.
