John McPhee explores the Pine Barrens, a vast, sparsely populated forest reserve in southern New Jersey that persists surprisingly close to Philadelphia and New York. Moving nonlinearly through local profiles, cultural history, geography, biology, and environmental questions, he follows Pine residents along hidden trails and listens to their accounts of a landscape often misunderstood from outside. Vanished settlements and remnants of a nineteenth-century iron industry reveal earlier lives within the woods, while the region’s pure underground aquifer shows how ecological abundance can remain vulnerable to contamination. McPhee also examines the stigmatized image of local people and their contested use of the name “Piney.” The result is a layered portrait of place, memory, independence, and environmental fragility.
